Dr. Cinda Thomas, an Ohio native, has lived in the Baltimore area since 1997. Upon her relocation to Baltimore, Dr. Thomas first taught voice for The University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She also served on the faculty at The Peabody Preparatory, teaching voice and vocal fundamentals. Additionally, she was an adjunct voice instructor for The Morgan State University. In 1998 she opened her private voice studio.
Academic Teaching Positions
Prior to her move to Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Thomas was a former faculty member at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where she taught studio voice, vocal pedagogy, and vocal diction. She was also the director of Cornell College’s Opera Workshop and served as vocal coach and music director for Quilters, H.M.S. Pinafore, Perfectly Frank, Pippin, Into the Woods, and Drood. Her first faculty position was at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where she taught studio voice, vocal pedagogy, vocal diction, and ear training and sight singing. Performance
As a performer, Dr Thomas was first interested in singing and performing opera. As a young soprano she sang with the Cleveland Opera Chorus, the Atlanta Phoenix Opera Company and Atlanta’s Repertory Opera Company. Once she began to teach in academia, her performing interests turned to recital and concert literature, eventually favoring early music, and giving many recitals and concerts featuring the music of Caccini, Monteverdi, Purcell, Bach, and Handel. Her interests also turned to musical theatre after performing the roles of the Beggar Woman in Sweeny Todd and The Witch in Into the Woods. In addition to the standard classical recital literature, she began to include music of Berlin, Gershwin, Kern, and Rodgers and Hammerstein on recital programs, in addition to other soprano musical theater repertoire.
