Alexander Technique and the Performing Arts
Alexander Technique has long been regarded as an important tool in the study of the performing arts. Many dance, theater, and music institutions across the U.S. include Alexander Technique in their curricula. At the famed Julliard School of Music, voice students are required to take one year of Alexander Technique study. One can also find favorable articles about Alexander Technique and singing in the Classical Singer magazine and the Journal of Singing.
Alexander Technique and Singing
Excitement, awe, joy— these words describe students as they experience singing and Alexander Technique. There is that look of, “Wow! So this is what it is like to sing with ease.” So what is Alexander Technique and how can it enhance your vocal study and performance skills? Alexander Technique is about releasing the compression throughout your body that is caused by the excessive, habitual tightening of your muscles, which you may or may not even feel. This compression and over tightening has a dramatic impact upon your neck, head, and spine, which in turn has a negative influence on the functioning of the larynx, diaphragm, ribs, abdominal and postural muscles. When this compression and over tightening is released, there can be an improvement in posture, breathing, and singing tone.
Alexander Technique and Performance
The principles of Alexander Technique are also helpful with issues relating to the stresses of auditioning and performing. Alexander Technique teaches students how to remain calm in moments of stress and anxiety, thereby allowing one to potentially always perform at his/her best.
